John Bishop commented;

The habanera rhythm used in Nursery Rhyme of Innocence and Experience turns up in several of her [Betty Roe's] songs. Her setting cleverly comes to terms with the ambiguities and poignancy of Causley's poem.

The song was originally written for children's voices and formed part of a set called Portraits from Union Street with Mevagissy and Timothy Winters.  The other two songs remain in manuscript.
